America and the Future: Setting the Record Straight: A Response to the Critics of “The Israel Lobby”

Paul Flum

President Bush and Congress must assume the responsibility to establish a free Palestine State alongside Israel, in the land that was originally the Palestinians.

We correctly supported the development of a Jewish homeland in Palestine - but never with the expectation that the Israeli government would constantly try to take more and more land without regard for the original inhabitants - the Palestinanians.

Land is a powerful asset, and the dispute over land between Israelis and Palestinians will continue to result in death, destruction and terrorism until a free state of Palestine is established. However, the Likud Party of Israel and other Zionists do not want this to happen.

Peace between the Israelis and Palestinians will come only when both sides are given an equal opportunity by America. Until recently, AIPAC and the Israel lobby were the only voices that registered with U.S. policy-makers, so consequently, Congress and the White House backed unequivocally any and all measures taken by Israel. controlling U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.

In 2006, Professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt provided an in-depth study of the Israel lobby - and its success in molding U.S. policy’s absolute backing for Israel in its effort to defeat the Palestinian’s desire for a state of their own.

We reprinted and disseminated their article "The Israel Lobby" that originally appeared in the London Review of Books. We delivered it to Congress, the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, and to all of our Embassies.

We are pleased to follow-up with Setting the Record Straight: A Response to Critics of "The Israel Lobby" written by Professors Walt and Mearsheimer in December 2006.

Sincerely,
Paul Flum

WHAT NOW?

The question of the hour for the Bush administration and Congress is WHAT NOW?

Until recently, it has been taboo for Americans to criticize Israel. To critically question this relationship was branded as anti-Semitic –– a situation that has crippled honest and ethical discussions of America’s role in the Middle East –– much to the detriment of our United States’
foreign policy.

That disastrous taboo is finally breaking down. And hopefully, in its place, will be the dawn of a new era in the Middle East, a future in which the United States finally demonstrates the same compassion and commitment to social justice for the Palestinians as it has always demonstrated towards the Israelis.

The answer to the question “WHAT NOW?” is clear !

President Bush, and Congress must make Palestinian Statehood our primary Middle Eastern concern, after the Iraq war. A war that would not have happened if we had done this before! The Bush administration must not be allowed to use this all-consuming war as an excuse to put off this problem any longer. In fact, had President Bush not taken us to war in Iraq, I believe we could have settled the entire Israeli/Palestinian problem with a fraction of the effort and money that we have spent in Iraq.

We would have had a positive, constructive, peaceful settlement worthy of our basic ethics and humanity –– rather than the chaotic, brutal death and destruction –– which is largely what our ill-conceived attack on Iraq has achieved.

The Israelis should not be allowed to use the power struggle between Hamas and Fatah as an excuse to put off the serious compromises that will be required of all in order for an independent Palestinian state to be formed, once and for all! America must control these negotiations, and consequently, our own destiny.

Decades of hatred and anti-American feelings in the Middle East have swirled around the Palestinian Question.

The Bush administration, with the urging of Congress, must seize this moment, break from its traditional blind pro-Israeli bias and forge the ultimate settlement –– a free Palestinian State!

Let’s have these negotiations and a settlement now –– rather than invite another War and then try to make peace after more death and destruction.
