Sergio Vieira de Mello (1948 – 2003) “The Fight to Save the World”
Last year we decided to dedicate our PLAN V for Victory and Peace in Iraq to the United Nations’ Sergio Vieira de Mello.
de Mello, the personal representative of the U.N. Secretary General, was killed in Iraq on 19 August 2003 by a truck bomb that destroyed U.N. Headquarters in Baghdad.
A full page picture of de Mello appears on page 4 of our Plan V publication.
And on the follow page we quoted a close friend of de Mello for more than twenty years, Richard Holbrooke, who said of de Mello that he was “the brilliant and charismatic U.N. official who… symbolized the potential of the American relationship with the United Nations…. While loyally serving his organization, Sergio was usually advancing America’s long-term interests as well. He saw nothing strange or incompatible in this. On the contrary, he believed passionately that the ideas and goals of the United States were symmetrical, if not always identical. He was a great humanitarian.”
Now Samantha Power has written a brilliant book about this brilliant man. Chasing The Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and The Fight to Save the World.
The first time Samantha Power spoke about de Mello and her new book was in Washington on 19 February. See below to watch our exclusive video of this extraordinarily interesting tribute an extraordinarily important man and cause.
